Model Series

Visionary and emotional – that was the objective for the fifth generation, aimed at further solidifying the progressive prestige of the model series. From 1997, the C5 fulfilled these goals as a sporty and dynamic vehicle. In addition to its revolutionary technologies, it stood out for its variety of modern engines, transmissions and drive systems. With contemporary engines ranging from four to eight cylinders, the C5 met virtually every customer need. The Avant version established itself as a sporty lifestyle station wagon.

The model series was systematically expanded: From 1999, the S6 and S6 Avant attracted attention as particularly sporty top versions with a 340-horsepower V8 engine. Audi's quattro GmbH took it a step further starting in early 2002. The exclusive automotive manufacturer introduced the RS 6, a true sports car available as both a sedan and an Avant, based on the C series.

The A6 became off-road ready in the form of the Audi allroad quattro, launched in early 2001, defining a new segment. With its height-adjustable chassis, air suspension and extended quattro drive with additional locks, it was designed for tough off-road use.

In May 2001, a facelift was carried out. In addition to the chassis, noise insulation and brakes, the body structure was reinforced. Externally, the new models were recognizable by visible exhaust pipes, side clear-glass indicators, new bumpers, a new radiator grille and asymmetrical exterior mirrors. The Sideguard airbag system became standard on all models.

In August 2005, production of the A6 C5 ended after more than 1 million units were sold.

Design

Although the design of the Audi A6 was completely new, the distinctive front styling immediately identified it as a typical Audi. Headlights, hood, and bumper seamlessly merged into a cohesive unit with smooth form transitions. The characteristic Audi window design with a third side window created a generous impression, while the roofline spanned from the hood to the rear hatch like a bow. Nothing disrupted the precise and clear form of the body: flush-fitted bumpers, mirrors, door handles and side moldings were deliberately painted in body color. Trim, seams and operating elements contributed to the harmonious overall experience and conveyed a lasting impression of quality. The special surprise effect, however, was at the rear: it concluded with a round and flowing shape – both sensual and aerodynamic. The interplay of clear graphic lines, tautly shaped surfaces and three-dimensional rear lights intentionally evoked the Audi TT, incorporating elements of this vision for future Audi designs. With the C5, Audi brought excitement back to the large sedan segment, replacing the classic three-box design with a compact, almost monolithic coherence.

Equipment Lines

The Audi A6 C5 was available in three different equipment lines: Advance, Ambition and Ambiente.

Advance
The nature-inspired line was available in three colors: subtle Slate (gray), Lago (green) and reddish-brown Terra. The fabrics featured a relief-like, wavy structure. Headliners, seat belts, floor carpets and instrument panels were color-coordinated with the interior. A bright, titanium-colored aluminum trim called “Stars” was standard but could be replaced with silk-matte walnut root wood for an additional cost. Fine Buffalino leather in the three colors was also available as an extra.

Ambition
This line featured a sportier interior design with the Chess on Onyx fabric. A darker aluminum trim completed the base variant. Leather options included rich Emerald Green, a brown Maron tone and dark Onyx. Walnut root wood was optionally available instead of the aluminum trim.

Ambiente
This was the classically elegant version of the Audi A6 C5 with a fresh and modern interpretation. The finely structured fabric was available in Melange and Royal Blue, along with a variant in fine Nappa leather or fine velour fabric, both also offered in Vanilla. The aluminum trim in the Ambiente line had a warm pearl tone and could optionally be replaced with amber-colored Vavona wood applications.
